No roof, no finish for Bayley Currey at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. — A caution for debris in turn four on lap 95 of the FR8 208 at Atlanta Motor Speedway didn’t catch much attention.

Until the debris was revealed.

Officials picked up a piece of Bayley Currey’s roof from turn four. Currey came to pit road and then the garage, deeming the truck unrepairable.

According to Currey, a piece of debris hit his windshield and knocked the tabs loose. That caused most of the roof to buffet up and down until finally it flew off on lap 95.

“We had that piece of debris early and collapsed everything. Once it did that, the piece started flapping. Just like any piece of metal, it was gonna break,” Currey said. “It broke all the tabs, the windshield tray, broke out of the truck. When that happened, five six laps before, the windshield was laying there on the bars. I saw daylight and it kept getting bigger until the damn thing flew off.”

While Niece Motorsports has the truck, NASCAR has the roof piece that flew off. They said they will meet with the team next week to discuss what happened.

Currey finished 31st after placing 10th in stage two. He believed had a strong truck for the finish.

“We believed we had the best truck out there. We were just about to make our move when that happened,” he said.

The 31st-place finish puts Currey 15th in points, -10 to a playoff spot. The next race is Friday, March 1, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
