Sheldon Creed short of first Xfinity win again

RIDGEWAY, S.C. — Sheldon Creed earned his 15th Top-3 finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series — but again it wasn’t the win he has been pining so long for.

Creed posted his fourth career third-place finish to go with the 11 runner-up finishes he’s had in what is now 93 Xfinity Series starts. Like those 14 other days when he came so close, it could’ve been so much different if circumstances out of his control hadn’t hindered him.

Creed led four times for 30 of 150 laps. The fourth time was with eight laps to go when he passed teammate Christopher Bell, who led 108 laps. In three laps, Creed had a 1.3-second advantage on Bell.

At the same time, a caution flew for A.J. Allmendinger slamming the wall twice with a right-front tire issue.

On pit road before overtime, Creed executed a perfect performance on pit road but his crew was about 1.5 seconds slower than Bell and Cole Custer. Creed lost the lead and restarted third, behind Bell and Custer who went 1-2 on the day.

“Ugh, I don’t know what to do to be better than that. I put in the best effort. I love my pit crew and can’t say anything bad about them. We just got beat on pit road,” Creed said. “It’s a bummer. I’m so proud of everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. I took a chance on myself, bringing all the money I could to this team. I’m not making a dollar this year. It just hurts coming so close.”

Creed earned his first stage win of the 2024 season and now sits fifth in points. If the playoff started today, he would hold the No. 9 seed

If the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs started today

  1. Justin Allgaier 2038 (points leader + 23 playoff points earned)
  2. Chandler Smith 2023 (third in points + 15 pts)
  3. Austin Hill 2020 (fourth + 13 pts)
  4. Cole Custer 2018 (second + eight pts)
  5. Shane van Gisbergen 2017 (17 pts from three wins and two stage wins)
  6. Jesse Love 2012 (eighth + nine pts)
  7. Riley Herbst 2011 (seventh + seven pts)
  8. Sam Mayer 2011 (11 pts earned from two wins and a stage win)
  9. Sheldon Creed 2007
  10. A.J. Allmendinger 2005 (sixth)
  11. Sammy Smith 2001 (10th)
  12. Parker Kligerman 1998 (ninth and a stage win but has a 5 playoff point penalty)
