Spring surge provides potential Chase berth for Legacy Motor Club

Legacy Motor Club has shown out since the all-star break with an uptick in performance and results that can only be dub as their spring surge.

A spring surge that has vaulted their driver Erik Jones into a Chase position with ten races remaining in the regular season.

Legacy is starting to perform like a true Toyota backed team. So far this spring, their recent runs have made it seem as though they’ have’ve closed the performance gap to their fellow Toyota’s in Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing.

The team’s recent surge coincides with the recent influx of outside investment from nearly 27 celebrity investors, headlined by Darius Rucker, with more names expected to be unveiled in the coming months.

They backed there surprisingly good Nashville run in last weekend’s Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono. Where they achieved the organizations first double top ten of the season.

The accomplishment marked the first time the team put both cars into the top ten since the Southern 500 at Darlington last season.

The placements were only the fifth of its kind in LMC’s team history. All previous double top tens can be seen below.

  • 2024 Daytona 500 – Nemechek 7th & Jones 8th
  • 2025 Daytona 500 – Johnson 3rd & Nemechek 5th
  • 2025 Wurth 400 – Jones 5th & Nemechek 8th
  • 2025 Southern 500 – Jones 3rd & Nemechek 4th
  • 2026 The Great American Getaway 400 – Nemechek 4th & Jones 6th

Prior to the Dover all-star race, the Legacy Motor Club duo were very much outside Chase conversation. Both chartered entries even sat as far back as outside the top 25 in points.

Erik Jones sat the highest of the duo in 25th with teammate John Hunter Nemechek in 28th. But in the four races since the break both have climbed the standings.

Jones went into the all-star break with 214 points to his name but climbed an impressive 10 positions to 15th since. From finishing 13th in the Coca-Cola 600 then 11th at Nashville, to an insanely competitive second at his home track in Michigan, and finally a second consecutive top ten at Pocono in sixth.

He amassed almost two-thirds of his season total, 141 points, in those for races to reach 355 points.

While not as an insane climb as his teammate, John Hunter Nemechek has made great strides in the standings as well.

He gave his best all around weekend performance in a Cup Series car at Pocono. Nemechek qualified inside the top ten, and led a race-high 42 laps. His fourth-place marked his best finish this season and added another top five to the tally.

The No. 42 team entered the break with 189 points in 28th. In the four races since, he’s garnered 88 points to 277 total points in 25th. Good for over 45% of his season total in the span and more drivers within reaching distance too.

The Chase climb for John Hunter Nemechek might be too far out of reach. But for teammate Erik Jones the battle has just begun.

Erik Jones Chase Spoiler?

In this short amount of time the team came from outside the top 20 in points to firmly in the Chase hunt. Now, with the uptick in performance and driver Erik Jones inside the cutline in 15th, how likely is their Chase potential?

For Jones, the next two tracks types historically haven’t been his strong suit. If he can manage to avoid the carnage at Naval Base Coronado and finish Sonoma near the top 20, his Chase case strengthens.

July could be just as fruitful for the team. The month includes two more Toyota-friendly intermediates in Chicagoland and Indianapolis, where Jones started third a year ago. Then the wildcard that is now EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta and the reintroduced points paying North Wilkesboro.

August could be the team’s most pivotal month. The series starts the month at Iowa where Jones has not shown out in the past. Then they arrive at the flat ovals of Richmond and New Hampshire where its the same story for the No. 43 team.

Finally, the last race before the Chase is Daytona. Jones and crew came home fifth in the summer of 2025 but the late summer high-banks are unpredictable.

If he continues his hot streak on intermediates and overall speed, then he should be square in the hunt for one of the final positions. His Chase potential is cautiously optimistic but real.

For now, the Cup Series still has ten whole regular season races to complete. The first major step for LMC and Erik Jones comes this weekend on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

All three NASCAR national series will compete this weekend at The Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, California. The Cup Series will race Sunday, June 21st at 4:00 p.m. ET for the fifth and final race on Amazon Prime.
