Team Penske updates Josef Newgarden’s condition

NEWTON, IOWA — Team Penske updated Josef Newgarden’s condition Sunday night after he was taken to a local hospital.
Newgarden was taken by helicopter to the hospital to be treated for ‘head abrasions’ sustained from fainting – after wrecking out of the NTT INDYCAR Series HyVee Salute to Farmers 300 at Iowa Speedway.
Team Penske released a statement detailing, in part, that Newgarden underwent scans at the hospital. The scans came back negative but he was held overnight for further observation.
Newgarden will still need to be evaluated by the INDYCAR medical staff Thursday, in order to be cleared to race July 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course (12 p.m. ET; TV: NBC, Peacock).
Newgarden is tied for third in points with Scott Dixon, 34 points behind leader Will Power, with five races left. He won Saturday’s HyVeeDeals.com 250 at Iowa Speedway.
