Trackhouse’s Project 91 adds Kevin Magnussen for San Diego

CONCORD, N.C. — The PROJECT91 experience is returning to Naval Base Coronado this June!

Trackhouse Racing announced that former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen will drive the No. 91 Qualcomm  Chevrolet at San Diego and make his NASCAR Cup Series debut.

He will join the accomplished list of drivers to run in the entry such as Shane van Gisbergen, Helio Castroneves, and fellow F1 alumni Kimi Raikkonen.

Magnussen currently competes for BMW in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) championship in the hypercar division.

The 33-year-old Dane has extensive Formula One experience. He made 185 starts for the likes of McLaren, Renault, and most notably the team from Kannapolis, North Carolina in Haas.

While he’s most known for being an ironman in the category, he has accomplished four podiums and one career pole. That lone pole came at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix where he aced Interlagos for Haas’ first pole in team history.

This isn’t his first foray into American motorsports. He made a lone start for Arrow McLaren at Road America in 2021 where he led 6 laps before retiring due to mechanical issues.

In addition to his many 24 hours of Daytona IMSA starts, he also currently competes for BMW’s GTP class for select races in the series.

Though he’s new to the series, his family isn’t. In 2009, his father Jan Magnussen completed a one-off start in the No. 09 Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet at Sonoma. He took his Phoenix Racing entry to a 12th-placed finish on that day.

Now, he’s ready for his first NASCAR experience at San Diego where he will join his father Jan as the second Magnussen to race in the series.

Words from the Group

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR,” said Magnussen.

“What Justin Marks and Trackhouse have done with PROJECT91 is unique. To provide drivers from outside of the NASCAR world with a chance to compete at this level. I’m proud to have this opportunity.”

“I’ve already spent time with the team in North Carolina – meeting everyone, doing the seat fit, going through pit stop procedures and all the details that come with preparing for a NASCAR weekend. They’re an awesome group of people, incredibly dedicated, and just as excited about this debut as I am. I really can’t wait to get to San Diego and experience it all for the first time.” concluded the former F1 driver.

“I’m thrilled to be able to bring back PROJECT91 again this year, especially at San Diego,” said Marks.

“We were waiting for the right opportunity with the right partner and driver to bring this PROJECT91 entry to fruition. Qualcomm is a worldwide brand, and Kevin Magnussen is a global driver, and both are elements we look for when it comes to running PROJECT91.”

Magnussen and PROJECT 91 will take the green flag on June 21 for the 3.4-mile naval base street course in San Diego, with coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime.
