Truex now tied with Newman, Kahne in unusual record

Martin Truex Jr. is now officially tied with Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman among active drivers for the most wins in the Cup Series without ever scoring consecutive victories.
Martin Truex Jr. won last Sunday at Sonoma Raceway and followed that up with a fourth-place run in the Overton’s 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Truex entered Chicagoland as the winner of the last two Cup Series races at the 1.5-mile speedway.
“All in all we battled here today with track position and we were a fourth-place car and that’s where we finished so it was a good day,” Truex said of his finish.
All three drivers have 18 career wins apiece. The mark ties them for seventh all-time among Cup Series drivers who have never won back-to-back.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. holds the record with 26 wins. Ricky Rudd is second on the list with 23 wins and two-time series champion Terry Labonte is third on the list at 22 wins.
Sixteen of the 24 active winners in the Cup Series have never won back-to-back. An “active” is defined by a past winner who has raced in the series at least once in 2018.
