Ty Gibbs: NASCAR Cup 2026 Chase preview

In his best season as a NASCAR Cup Series driver so far, Ty Gibbs takes home two regular season victories to qualify for the 2026 Chase.

This will be his second career postseason appearance and first since 2024 where he ended the season in 15th.

Gibbs has well earned a coveted top five seed entering the Chase. He sets off as the fourth seeded driver thanks in part to his victories and vast developmental improvement overall.

A Touted Turnaround

His 2025 may have been highlighted with the In-Season Challenge win but everything else was downcast in his junior season slump.

Those kind of slumps are a high indicator of a career fizzling out and Ty Gibbs knew he had to prove himself to the sport in 2026.

The 23-year-old entered his fourth Cup Series season looking for any chance to shift his career trajectory with a win and consistent results.

Armed with one of the best teams in the sport, he and crew chief Tyler Allen were on a mission for success. After a pair of rocky superspeedway results to begin the season he settled into the “real season” and accomplished just that.

Gibbs hit the ground running and captured five top fives in the next six races which included his maiden win at Bristol. His early season breakthrough gave him and the team the attitude necessary to continue their march to the Chase.

Outside of some erratic at superspeedways and Texas, he never finished outside the top 15 on raw pace alone for the whole regular season.

He picked up one more win at Iowa which doubled-down their championship ambitions and finished the regular season strong with career-bests across the board.

The Numbers to Back Him Up

His improved average finish from a 17.9 to a 12.2 mirrored to an even better average start stat.

Since Darlington in March, he has only started outside the top ten three times. A feat that has seen his average start leap to a series-best 9.0 from a 13.6 in 2025.

Through 26 races, he has already set personal records this season. The first wins of his career are huge milestones but they do not show the whole picture on how a driver can finish the regular season in fourth.

Gibbs developed into a frontrunner and led the ninth most laps while securing a driver rating of 92.5, good for fifth-best in the series.

He set season-bests in total top five and top ten finishes and his total top 20 finishes will soon follow.

While already vindicated, can ride his season-highs into the Chase to further cement his breakthrough season or does his inexperience hinder him from a championship?

2026 Chase Outlook

Gibbs provides a burst of momentum in place of his lack of postseason experience. A burst that could see the youngest Joe Gibbs Racing driver ride far into the ten race format.

Outside of the wildcard that is Talladega, Gibbs has a shot at a maiden championship.

While his championship ceiling can net his with his first championship, his floor is deep. The 40-point deficit to his teammate Denny Hamlin combined with any hit to his current momentum could send his Chase spiraling.

With only two wins to his name he will have a chance to repeat at one of those tracks in the Chase. He will return to Bristol in the third race of ten.

Outside of Bristol can the young standout rise above the likes of Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick, or defending series champ Kyle Larson?

If he can, he will need to pick up valuable points where he can and continue his fantastic run of form to another entire level.
