Alexander Rossi taken to local hospital after Indianapolis 500 practice crash

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Front row starter Alexander Rossi has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation after his crash during the NTT INDYCAR Series Indianapolis 500 practice crash on Monday.

Rossi is alert and in good spirits but the team will have extensive repairs to make before the next session on Carb Day.

Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward and Dale Coyne Racing’s Romain Grosjean were also involved in the wreck. All three drivers were able to get out of this vehicles without the AMR safety teams assistance.

“I’m OK; I just feel bad for my car,” O’Ward said. “Just wrong place, wrong time. I just got collected there. I obviously hit the brakes and couldn’t do much to avoid it. I’m glad Alex is all right, Romain, as well.”

O’Ward and Rossi will go to a backup car with a new tub as the teams will use the next few days to prepare.

Conor Daly had to replace his front-wing and suffered under-wing damage after avoiding the melee. Meanwhile, Santino Ferrucci and Louis Foster were able to sneak through without damage.

He and others will not lose their starting positions as INDYCAR does not penalize teams who have to go to a backup car for the “500”.

Session 7 Results

The series planned to run the whole two-hour practice session but lightning disrupted just over 30 minutes through.

Before the severe weather cancellation, Josef Newgarden set the best individual speed of 226.198. Newgarden came into the session hungry for any positive running after a disappointing 23rd in qualifying the previous day and got his wish.

Takuma Sato followed the Team Penske standout in second as the only driver to eclipse the 225mph speed.

Then, Dennis Hauger, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Marcus Ericsson completed the top five. All three qualified in the back half of the field and needed strong sessions today to set their corrective course for the upcoming weekend.

Both penalized drivers rebounded today with top ten speed. Jack Harvey and Caio Collet finished 7th and 9th respectively.

Sting Ray Robb led the session with 47 circuits turned in the half-hour. The series as a whole turned 1,035 laps despite all the disruption.

Below are the full times for the penultimate Indianapolis 500 practice session.
