Bowman, Byron Penalized For Post-Richmond Infractions

NASCAR penalized Hendrick Motorsports on Thursday for infractions they found on Alex Bowman and William Byron’s cars run Sunday at Richmond Raceway.

Each team will lose 60 driver and owner championship points and five driver and owner playoff points. Each crew chief is suspended from two Cup Series races and fined $75,000.

NASCAR penalized Hendrick Motorsports for an improper complete roof hatch assembly. The part is used so the driver can exit the car, even if the driver’s side window is caved in. However, it can also be used for an aerodynamic advantage.

The rulebook states, “Except in cases explicitly permitted in the NASCAR Rules, installation of additional components, repairs, deletions, and/or modifications to Next Gen Single Source Vendor-supplied parts and/or assemblies will not be permitted.”

NASCAR’s penalty indicates the two teams didn’t use the mandated complete roof hatch assembly or they modified what they received.
