Briscoe hits the points jackpot in Las Vegas Chase win

LAS VEGAS —  Chase Briscoe nearly delivers a perfect points day as he hits the point-jackpot and wins the South Point Casino 400 at Las Vegas.

This is his second win of the season and his seventh of his NASCAR Cup Series career.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway has delivered the drama this weekend. For the second straight day the fans have been treated to a wall bouncing finish.

At the beginning of the day one of the only conclusions that were drawn was a victorious Joe Gibbs Racing driver due to the teams historic 1-2-3-4 start.

At the end of the day it was the driver who qualified the worst amongst them who got it done. It was Chase Briscoe who hit triple-sevens.

Briscoe only gained a single positions early in the day. But after the first caution of the day, he took the lead for the first time after leaping Denny Hamlin on pit road in the first stage.

From there he never truly conceded the front.

He went onto win the opening stage and further solidified his great race by sweeping the stages in the South Point Casino 400.

Surprisingly those were the first stage victories of his season. What was not surprising was how is day ended.

Only one week removed from his agonizing loss to Kyle Larson late at Kansas, the opportunity to right that wrong presented itself right away.

Briscoe held off early advances from Bubba Wallace and then Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick to claim his first chase victory.

He led 175 of the 276 circuits in his dominating win which was good for a near perfect 75-point day. Now, the series turns their attention back home for the penultimate intermediate race of the season in Charlotte.

Check out the amazing finish below.

The Top Ten

Kyle Larson comes up a few laps short of his second consecutive victory in the series. He was able to hold off Tyler Reddick for second-place and a further 14-point lead in the Chase to Denny Hamlin.

Reddick was able to gas it through the grass and crossed the start/finish line in the middle of the tri-oval infield for third.

Austin Cindric delivered his second career top five at an intermediate from fourth. Both great results have come in the previous two weekends.

Ryan Blaney made his move around William Byron on the final lap for a top five result from fifth.

William Byron now has strung four straight top ten results from sixth.

Chase Elliott finished one position higher than his previous intermediate track results from seventh.

Then Bubba Wallace went from battling Briscoe for the win with around 30 laps remaining to an eighth-placed finish. He tore through his tires in his efforts to return to victory lane but still wound up with a much needed top ten.

Shane van Gisbergen finished ninth for another tremendous top ten on an oval. He also claimed the best finish by a non-Chase driver.

Finally, Joey Logano recovered from a terrible starting position of 23rd to tenth in order to maintain in contention for his fourth straight even-year championship.

Notable Results

Carson Hocevar started the day off hot. Not hot as in fast, hot as in actually hot when his helmet air hose blew scorching hot air into his helmet before the green flag even dropped. He was able to fend off the heat and finish 12th.

Two other Chase drivers followed in the end. Chris Buescher and Daniel Suarez came across the finish line behind Hocevar in 13th and 14th.

Ryan Preece was last among the Chase drivers. He finished off the lead lap in 28th.

JGR Fumbles the Day

But the primary story of the day was how JGR’s super Saturday turned into an overall sour Sunday.

Polesitter Denny Hamlin led the opening 35 laps and even cycled out to the lead after the opening green flag pit cycle finished.

However, the team decided to pit Hamlin from the lead only a few laps later under the first caution period which altered his race for good.

The decision not only put him back to 15th place, but it critically allowed his biggest championship rival Kyle Larson a lifeline to catch back up to the leaders.

Hamlin clawed his way back inside the top five by the end of the second stage. He looked primed to take the green and white checkers but coming around to the two laps remaining in the stage trouble hit the No. 11.

He took an abnormally high line in turns three and four and found the rubber marbles. The loss of traction spun Hamlin while he ran third. He sustained minor splitter damage which hurt his pace for the rest of the race.

Hamlin wound up 16th on the day. He leaves Las Vegas in a deeper 40-point hole to the Chase leader as he failed to even score stage points today.

Meanwhile his other two teammates of Ty Gibbs and Christopher Bell also had their own problems.

Ty Gibbs went from the front of the field to the rear of the field after sustaining a pit road speeding penalty on his first stop of the day. He never recovered the track position from there to finish one spot lower than Hamlin in 17th.

Finally, Christopher Bell held steady inside the top five for most of the day, and gathered the second-most stage points, until his power steering gave out.

His crew failed to fix the issue for him. With a tight car and a sore wrist, Bell struggled all the way to a 23rd-placed finish.

Below are the full results of the South Point Casino 400 and the updated Chase standings after the fifth race of the postseason.

Race Information/Start

Chase leader Kyle Larson returns to Sin City looking to continue to stretch his championship lead out. But twice-defending Las Vegas Motor Speedway winner Denny Hamlin, and Larson’s nearest foe in the Chase, has the pole to help turn the tides back in his direction.

If Larson wants a chance to add a third win this season and in the Chase he will have to beat a fast Toyota group.

Toyota will be the manufacturer to beat today. For the first time in Joe Gibbs Racing history they’ve locked out the first four starting positions.
