Carson Kvapil prevails to win the HyVee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa — Carson Kvapil gains the lead on the first overtime and then survives the second overtime to win the HyVee Perks 250 at Iowa Speedway.

This is Kvapil’s second career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win and accomplishes the feat in consecutive races.

Kvapil qualified third and sat inside the top ten during the first stage for seventh by the break. In the second stage, he fell outside of the top ten, and it looked as though the win was out of his hands.

While each of the first two stages had one caution for incident, the final narrative of the afternoon was filled with cautions.

The final stage saw a staggering eight cautions. From lap 151 until lap 200 the field could not go more than six circuits without an incident.

With all the chaos, Carson finally caught the right side of fortune in the final stage. He battled his way back to third and eventually passed Ryan Sieg for second.

From there, Kvapil was too far away from race leader Ross Chastain. The win seemed out of his grasp in the closing laps until a flat tire from Jeb Burton gave him the opportunity in overtime where he came out on top.

After the checkered flag and overtimes, 12 total cautions tied the series record at Iowa Speedway.

He becomes the ninth driver in series history to capture his first two wins in back-to-back starts. The most recent of whom was Shane van Gisbergen in 2024.

The Top Ten

Rajah Caruth claimed second place during the second overtime restart. With the podium finish, he sits only 15 points behind Brent Crews for the final spot in the Chase with one regular season race remaining.

William Sawalich nearly had his Chase hopes dashed in the middle of the final stage after his involvement in the lap 160 caution. But the Minnesotan benefitted from the chaos and climbed back through the field to finish third.

He leaves Iowa still ahead of the cutline in 11th but only has a single point advantage of his teammate Taylor Gray as the series heads to Daytona.

Ross Chastain led 63 laps before Carson Kvapil outgunned him on the initial overtime restart. He fell to fourth after restarting on the front row during the final green flag wave.

Sheldon Creed rounds out the top five from fifth.

The back half of the top ten benefitted from the carnage as well. Nick Sanchez made his return to Peterson Motorsports for sixth. Taylor Gray held steadfast inside the top ten for seventh.

Then the Sam Hunt Racing duo of Dean Thompson and Harrison Burton finished eighth and ninth.

Finally, Brennan Poole finished tenth for his first top ten since COTA in February, his second of the season.

Notable Results

The polesitter, Ryan Sieg, led wire to wire to collect his first stage win since Michigan in 2024. Then, Justin Allgaier passed Sheldon Creed midway through the second stage for another stage victory this season.

Though the stage winning duo ran inside the top five for the whole event, the initial overtime restart got the better of them.

They both sustained massive damage for 33rd and 24th respectively. However, Allgaier leaves Iowa as the regular season champion and clinches the first seed for the O’Reilly Series Chase.

Two drivers made their debut in the HyVee Perks 250. Carson Brown finished on the lead lap in 15th while Derek Lemke kept his car out of trouble for 26th-place, one lap down.
