Chase Elliott closer to NASCAR record after New Hampshire run

Chase Elliott is closer to overtaking Mike Skinner’s record of leading the most laps in the Cup Series without posting a victory.
Elliott led 23 laps Sunday in the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, bringing his career total to 960 laps led. He is 70 laps led away from overtaking Skinner (1,029) for the spot on that list.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver has led a total of 42 laps in 2018, the 17th-most among the competition.
“It’s really nice to be able to go up there and lead some laps,” Elliott said. “I know it wasn’t the right part of the race, but still, leading laps for us is big compared to what we’ve been doing. I’m proud of the effort.”
Elliott posted a top-five finish and stage win at New Hampshire.

Across his 22-year career in the Cup Series, Skinner led 1,029 laps in 286 total starts. Elliott has raced in 97 races in NASCAR’s premier series in three full-time seasons, leading a total of 960 laps.
The next race for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be Sunday at Pocono Raceway, a track Elliott has never led a lap at in the Cup Series.
