Clint Bowyer on the outside looking in ahead of Sunday’s elimination race in Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. — Clint Bowyer enters Sunday’s Can-Am 500 at ISM Raceway 51 points below the playoff cutline, which essentially puts the driver of the No. 14 machine in a must win situation.
Bowyer opened the Round of 8 with back-to-back finishes of 21st and 26th at Martinsville Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Bowyer finished sixth at ISM Raceway earlier this year.
“We had a good race in the spring,” Bowyer said. “We didn’t qualify the best. We were good on our long runs and things like that.
“We need to get our car to be a top-five car here in practice today and I’ve always said if you can run in the top-five, you can have a shot at winning if something happens and presents itself, so it’s important for a lot of ways.”
In 26 starts at the 1-mile track, Bowyer has accumulated seven top-10s and has led just 22 laps.
