Crew chief named for Jimmie Johnson in 2024

Jason Burdett, the veteran NASCAR Xfinity Series crew chief who racked up 18 wins in nine years, will work with Jimmie Johnson in 2024.

The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will have Burdett as his crew chief. Working under Burdett are lead engineer Evan Bensch and car chief Robbie Fairweather, who worked under Todd Gordon last season.

“I have a very long history of working with Jason at Hendrick Motorsports. We spent a lot of time together throughout the years,” Jimmie Johnson said. “Jason is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met in the sport. He’s solid and he’s created an amazing legacy for himself. I’ve always had a great working relationship with him, and I’m just genuinely excited he has joined the Club.”

So far, Legacy Motor Club has announced three starts for Johnson but officials plan to announce his full schedule in early 2024.

“I’m excited to join Legacy Motor Club and reunite with Jimmie,” Burdett said. “I was part of Jimmie’s team when it all began and witnessed his first win in 2002. I am amazed at the legacy Jimmie has created throughout the years, and I am honored to be a part of continuing that legacy with him.”

JASON BURDETT’S CAREER

Burdett worked with Regan Smith, who drove the No. 7 JR Motorsports entry to two wins in 2015. Then, in 2016, Justin Allgaier took over the No. 7 ride and worked with Burdett.

Allgaier and Burdett earned 16 wins and five Championship Four appearances (2016-17, 2019-20, 2022) in seven years.

Then, in 2023, Burdett worked with Brandon Jones.

Now, Burdett moves up to the Cup Series where he previously served on two championship-winning teams. He worked as a tire specialist for Robert Yates Racing and was a part of Dale Jarrett’s 1999 championship season.

Then, in 2001, he was with Hendrick Motorsports and the Robbie Loomis-led, Jeff Gordon-piloted No. 24 team that claimed the Cup Series title that year.

Burdett’s first crew chief role was in 2007, working with Dale Jarrett as his crew chief at Michael Waltrip Racing. From 2008-10, he worked under Steve Letarte as car chief for Jeff Gordon – then for Dale Earnhardt Jr. from 2011-14 before becoming an Xfinity Series crew chief.
