Greg Van Alst’s Xfinity debut goes up in flames

HAMPTON, GA. — What was going to be a big weekend for Greg Van Alst, as he approached his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut, ended in a fiery wreck Saturday.

Van Alst had a mechanical issue in turn four on lap 62. He spun, hit the wall and collected Mason Massey. Then, the car went up in flames in turn one.

The independent driver won the ARCA Menards Series race at Daytona in February. The win netted him the No. 44 Alpha Prime Racing ride Saturday.

During his qualifying lap, he did a half-spin but completed the lap. Van Alst made the race as there were 38 entries.

His ARCA Menards Series team’s future is uncertain as they scaled back to part-time operations last month.
