INDYCAR owners agree to establish charter system

INDIANAPOLIS — INDYCAR confirmed Monday that 10 team owners have agreed to a landmark charter agreement in the NTT INDYCAR Series.

The charter agreement, with 25 entries among the 10 teams, goes into effect immediately. This is the first charter system ever introduced in series history.

Similar to what NASCAR established in 2016, a chartered entry is guaranteed a starting spot on the grid for every race, except for the Indianapolis 500 (NASCAR’s system has no exceptions). Only chartered entries are eligible for the annual Leaders Circle award program that compensates the 22 top finishers in the prior year’s championship.

This agreement goes through the end of 2031.
