Joey Logano fined $10k for wearing altered gloves

NASCAR handed Joey Logano a $10,000 fine Tuesday for wearing altered gloves believed to give him a competitive advantage in qualifying at Atlanta.

Officials penalized him under rulebook sections 14.3.1.1 A, B & F. It specifies driver responsibilities and driver protective clothing/equipment.

The onboard camera appeared to show Logano wearing webbed gloves. The sanctioning body ruled those gloves didn’t meet the SFI specifications.

The sanctioning body also ruled the gloves gave him an unfair competitive advantage as drivers often put their left hand in the opening between the window net and the A-post to streamline the air and go faster.

Logano qualified second for the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta. However, he had to drop to the rear and pass through pit road on lap one once NASCAR discovered the alleged infraction.

Logano caught a lucky break as the field crashed in turn one right as he was serving his penalty.

The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion recovered to take the lead 39 laps into the 100-lap stage two.

Logano appeared to have the best car. Then, his car got tighter as stage two came to a close, resulting in an incident where he drifted into Chris Buescher – putting them both in the wall exiting turn two.

Logano’s car wasn’t the same after this. He finished 28th, 8 laps down, after leading 27 laps.
