Kaden Honeycutt takes Truck Series pole at Naval Base Coronado

CORONADO, CALI. — Kaden Honeycutt will start where he left the last NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series road course event – from first. He won the pole for the Navy 250 from Naval Base Coronado.

This is his third career pole in 76 career Truck Series attempts and his second of the season.

“This is the the most fun I’ve ever had on a road course” said Honeycutt. While fun, he nearly wrecked his truck after crossing the timing line. He was left with only some cosmetic damage on the right-rear quarter panel. “It’s probably not the last mark it will have on it today” he joked.

Honeycutt will have the previous street course winner starting alongside him in Layne Riggs. The top two in the regular season standings continue to find each other near the front.

Riggs will have his teammate Chandler Smith lined directly behind him in the starting lineup from third. Smith will share the second row with a driver who will be starting only his second ever Truck Series event, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson

Grant Enfinger will start fifth to complete the top five. His impressive result was more than a second in front of Gio Ruggiero who starts alongside him in sixth.

Andres Perez de Lara will start seventh for Niece Motorsports. Their boss Al Niece returns to the naval base for the first time in more than 55 years as a car owner instead of a cadet. Ty Majeski will start eighth.

Finally, Landen Lewis and Parker Kligerman, who makes his return to the series, rounds out the top ten from the fifth row.

Other notable starters include, Jamie McMurray who starts 21st in the Kaulig Ram No. 25. Brenden Gaughan from 28th in the BMR No. 20. Then, Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks from the rear.

Notable Events

Nearly half the field had difficulties coming to grips with the lack of grip on the QUALCOMM Circuit at Naval Base Coronado. Select teams will only have around four hours to make the appropriate repairs.

In the first group, Stewart Friesen completed his lap but not without heavy damage. He will have to go to a backup truck and he was not the only one who had troubles.

Christian Eckes tore the right rear off his truck after hitting the inside tire barriers in turn 12b. His team will be able to make repairs to their primary truck but they failed to set a time.

In the second group, the polesitter Honeycutt and Landen Lewis both had the rear of their trucks slide out and into the wall. Both will be able to make repairs and not fall to the rear.

35 trucks entered the event which meant every trucker will participate in the race. However, not everyone was able to run in qualifying as only 30 drivers laid down quick times.

Tricon Garage teammates, Adam Andretti and Tanner Gray both wrecked during the practice sessions. For Gray, its the second straight race where he did not participate in qualifying.

They joined Justin Marks, Brenden Queen, and Daniel Hemric as the five who did not set a lap due to damage.

Lastly, NASCAR ran the normal road course qualifying procedure for the street course.

The field were split into two groups that each ran a 20 minutes sessions. Drivers could set their fastest time within the allotted time then times were combined to make the order.

That order can be seen below as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series set their lineup for the Navy 250 on the Naval Base Coronado.
