Layne Riggs wins late thriller in the Truck Series race at Naval Base Coronado.

CORONADO, CALI. — Layne Riggs comes up clutch in overtime and wins a late thriller in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ Navy 250 at The Naval Base Coronado on QUALCOMM Circuit.

This is his fourth win of the season and his ninth series victory overall.

With this win, “Layne van Riggsbergen” has swept both street courses this season (Coronado & St. Pete). Riggs led a race-high 21 of the 53 laps and maintained his hot streak as he took home the trophy in three of the previous four series events.

Now, the current point leader leaves SoCal with nearly a race in hand in the regular season standings over Kaden Honeycutt. His 65 point lead will be tough to catch with only five races remaining.

What a thrilling overtime finish. Chandler Smith and Honeycutt controlled the final restart but it all went south before the pair made it to the first corner. Smith spun into the inside wall while Honeycutt sustained major damage during the incident as well.

Both of the frontrunners led a combined 23 laps but finished in the early twenties. Smith finished his 100th series start in 22nd and Honeycutt in 23rd after they ran inside the top three for most of the race.

Their misfortune enabled the top three of Riggs, Daniel Hemric, and Tyler Reif to fight amongst themselves for the race win.

The trio fought hard in the final lap and a half where any one of them could have been victorious. Ultimately, the winningest driver of the season takes home another after Reif missed the chicane while leading with two corners to go in the race.

The young Reif made only his seventh career start and fell down to 19th after his miscue. Daniel Hemric came home second while dealing with a deflating and bent right-front wheel.

The Top Ten

Tyler Ankrum’s barrier breaking caution with four laps remaining flipped the finish and its order on its head.

Because of the red flag, and the following caution afterwards, the majority of the top ten made up their places.

Daniel Hemric was joined in the podium positions by Kaz Grala, who returned to the series in the Halmar Friesen Racing No. 62 for third.

Landen Lewis finished fourth in what was a great way to kick off the rest of his season in the Niece Motorsports No. 45.

Ty Majeski persisted inside the top five for the majority of the Navy 250 and came home fifth.

Much like at Watkins Glen, the Kaulig RAM’s made the most of the late carnage. Justin Haley led the brigade in sixth with teammate Brenden Queen in seventh for much needed points.

Chase contenders Ben Rhodes, Christian Eckes, and Gio Ruggiero rounded out the top ten. All three complete comebacks from damage sustained earlier in the day.

Parker Kligerman won the second stage for his fourth career series stage win. He was not among the five or so trucks without any sort of damage and finished 18th.
