Kyle Larson will stay and run the Indianapolis 500

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Kyle Larson will stay and run the Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Track President Doug Boles confirmed.

Larson will start the Indy 500 in the No. 17 Arrow McLaren/HendrickCars.com Chevrolet.

With a 2-hour-plus rain delay likely overlapping the finish of the Indy 500 with the start of the Coca-Cola 600, Justin Allgaier is expected to start the 600 in Larson’s No. 5 car.

NASCAR rules stipulate the driver who starts a race will collect the points and get credited with the finish, even if another driver gets in the car mid-race.

If Allgaier starts the race, he’ll get credit fir the finish but will only collect owner points for the team since he runs for points in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. That means Larson will need to apply for a waiver to remain playoff-eligible.

With the high-profile nature of Larson’s run and the unforeseen circumstances, NASCAR will likely grant Larson a waiver.

TRE reached out to Hendrick Motorsports but haven’t heard back.
