SPEEDWAY, Ind. — NASCAR is back on the famed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval this weekend with the Cup Series and the Xfinity Series.

It’s the first time NASCAR has raced on the oval since 2020. Back then, they tried running at Indy on Fourth of July weekend. However, the event was run with no fans in attendance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Four years later and clear of the pandemic, drivers are welcome the return of the Brickyard 400. No frills in the name, just the Brickyard 400:

Cody Ware and AJ Allmendinger are in the revolving Rick Ware Racing and Kaulig Racing entries this weekend.

There are three open entries this weekend for Indianapolis:

  • No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota – Jimmie Johnson

Johnson will make his sixth start of the 2024 season. His finishes so far this season are 28th (four laps down) at Daytona, 29th at Texas, 28th (five laps down) at Dover, 38th and a crash DNF at Kansas, and 29th at Charlotte.

As a four-time winner of the Brickyard 400, Johnson is coming to the right track to turn his part-time tenure around. Only two other drivers on the entry list have won the 400 before – Kyle Busch (twice), Brad Keselowski (2018).

  • No. 66 MBM Motorsports Ford – BJ McLeod

McLeod finished 37th, eight laps down, in his only other start for MBM at Charlotte. In his own No. 78 entry this season, McLeod finished 24th, three laps down at Atlanta – while at Talladega, he drove to the front of the field and led five laps before falling back to 32nd, one lap down.

  • No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet – Ty Dillon

Dillon will make his first NASCAR Cup Series start for RCR since the 2015 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. This season, he has four starts for other teams.

In the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet, Dillon finished 29th, one lap down, at Richmond; 16th at Texas; and 20th at New Hampshire.

In the No. 50 Team AmeriVet/The Money Team Chevrolet, he finished 36th, two laps down, at Charlotte.

For the first time since the August 2006 race at Watkins Glen International, and just the second time since the start of the 2003 season, JD Motorsports doesn’t have a car entered for a NASCAR Xfinity Series race. The organization reportedly sold off the owner points for its No. 4 entry to the No. 45 Alpha Prime Racing entry. Garrett Smithley, who has raced for JDM this year, will be in the No. 45.

Joe Graf Jr. will make his first start of the season this weekend. Graf will race for Joe Gibbs Racing, an organization he raced with six times in his full-time campaign last year. His best finish was ninth at Kansas Speedway in September.

Aric Almirola is also back after a reported suspension for a physical altercation with Bubba Wallace. This season, Almirola has three Top-5 finishes – including a win at Martinsville – plus finishes of 12th at Las Vegas and 31st after a crash at Phoenix.

Carson Kvapil is also back with JR Motorsports in the No. 88 entry he has had success with this year. He has three Top-5s and an average finish of 8.4 in his first five starts – not only for JRM but in the series as a whole.

Conor Daly is in the No. 26 Sam Hunt Racing entry. This will mark his first start of the 2024 Xfinity Series season and his first NXS start on an oval.

BJ McLeod will race for MBM Motorsports. He made four starts for himself at the very start of the season.

Other returns:

  • Daniel Dye – Kaulig Racing
  • Josh Bilicki – DGM Racing
  • Joey Gase – Joey Gase Racing

The drivers for SS-Green Light Racing are TBA.

Justin Allgaier is the only driver in the field who has won at Indianapolis before. He won in 2018, driving the No. 7 Dove Men + Care Chevrolet (pictured above).

The one thing that this weekend’s race will have in common with the 2018 race is the use of heavily-restricted engines, similar to what is used at Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta.

Marco Andretti will race for Roper Racing. It is his second start for them and his first since infamously losing his rear-end housing at Circuit of the Americas in March.

William Sawalich is back with TRICON Garage in the No. 1 Toyota. Sawalich came out of the gate strong last season, bagging three Top-10s in six starts. In his start this year, though, the 17-year-old Minnesota native has finished 21st, two laps down, at Bristol and 26th at Martinsville.

Last year at LOIRP, Sawalich finished sixth so there are high hopes for the weekend.

Hailing from across the state line, Wisconsinite Luke Fenhaus is back with ThorSport Racing after netting a Top-10 finish in his series debut at Gateway with ThorSport a month ago.

MORE:

Conor Daly and Ross Chastain will fill out Niece Motorsports’ lineup for the weekend. Sammy Smith will race for Niece Motorsports as well.

The ARCA Menards Series will race Friday before the Trucks. The ARCA race at LOIRP will go green at around 5:30 p.m. It is scheduled for 200 laps and is a combo race with ARCA East. Click here for more info.
