Panel upholds L1 penalty against Austin Dillon’s team

The National Motorsports Appeal Panel ruled Tuesday to uphold NASCAR’s L1 penalty against Austin Dillon’s team.

NASCAR penalized Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team for an improper underwing assembly on their Martinsville car. the sanctioning body alleged the team improperly modified the assembly.

The panel heard the No. 3 team’s case and issued this statement after upholding all original penalties:

“As submitted the nuts are not a thread locking device – they are connected and part of the turn buckle. The nuts do not lock the assembly. Therefore, the assembly has been modified.”

Kirk Russell, Lake Speed and Kevin Whitaker served on the panel.

Because of their decision, these penalties will remain:

  • Loss of 60 championship points and five playoff points
  • Two-race suspension and $75,000 fine for crew chief Keith Rodden
