Stefan Wilson out of Indianapolis 500 after practice wreck

SPEEDWAY, IN. — Stefan Wilson is out of the Indianapolis 500 after suffering a fractured vertebra in a practice wreck Monday.
Exiting turn one, Legge bumped into Wilson as he checked up. Wilson spun, clipped Legge and hit the wall nearly flush with the front end of his car.
Legge hit the wall with the right side of the car and went airborne. Medical crews checked and released her from the infield care center after she exited the car.
Meanwhile, medics helped Wilson out of the car and placed him on a stretcher. The 33-year-old British racer then gave a thumbs-up before going into the ambulance and to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed Wilson with a fracture of his T12 vertebrae. He will remain in the hospital overnight for more tests and observation.
DRR/Cusick Motorsports will name a replacement in a reasonable time, the organization said.
Before his practice wreck, Stefan Wilson timed into his fifth Indianapolis 500 on the first day of qualifying Saturday. He was set to start 25th.
Before the wreck, Wilson was 23rd fastest, 0.8595 seconds off of Will Power’s pace-setting lap. Wilson ran his fastest lap on lap 6 of 57.
In the other sessions, he ran 15th, 33rd, 24th and 23rd fastest respectively.
His best finish in the 500 was 15th in 2018.
