Tyler Reddick: ‘We let it get away’ after strong Phoenix race

“We were good. We just let it get away.”

Tyler Reddick was disappointed finishing 10th after leading a race-high 68 laps in Sunday’s Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Reddick tied Toyota teammate Denny Hamlin for most laps led. He won stage one and finished second in stage two.

Reddick led on lap 216 when Hamlin slid up the track in turn one and spun. That brought out a caution that jumbled up the field.

Toyota teammate Martin Truex Jr. stayed out with Ryan Preece, Todd Gilliland, Chris Buescher, Ross Chastain, Chase Briscoe, Michael McDowell, Erik Jones and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in ninth.

From 10th to 16th, it was Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace, Brad Keselowski, Daniel Suarez, Kyle Larson, William Byron and Tyler Reddick. Meanwhile Christopher Bell restarted 20th and Denny Hamlin restarted 23rd.

Truex set sail with Preece behind and Gibbs in tow after leaping through the field. Meanwhile, Bell got through traffic better than Reddick and gained seven spots within five laps.

“We got something to learn there. He just drove by me. He was faster,” he said.

Reddick stalled out in 10th at the checkered flag. Meanwhile, Bell won.

“I just couldn’t get by people. Just couldn’t get around people. We weren’t that great that last run. The balance went away whatever it was. We were lucky to run 10th at the end,” Reddick said.

Despite the disappointing result, Reddick has now earned the second-most points two weeks in a row. He sits fifth in points, -21 to points leader Ryan Blaney and +46 to the playoff cutline, heading to Bristol next Sunday.
