William Byron ties three drivers for 64th on wins list

William Byron’s victory Sunday in the Go Bowling at The Glen secured the driver’s fifth Cup Series win of 2023 and the ninth of his career.

Byron is now tied at 64th on the all-time Cup Series wins list with Paul Goldsmith, Cotton Owens, and Bob Welborn.

“We’ve had fast cars but we just haven’t executed races,” Byron said of his win. “Today was just faultless.”

Byron started the season tied for 82nd on the wins list. Byron’s ninth win comes in his 205th start. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has earned all of his victories driving the team’s No. 24 car.

Now ahead of Byron — all with 10 victories — include Donnie Allison, Clint Bowyer and Sterling Marlin.

“It’s a great win, I don’t know what it means and all that,” Byron said. “I don’t read into that, but I think it shows that when we are at our best we can perform like this.”

The other drivers with nine victories
Goldsmith never raced a full schedule, making 127 total starts between 1956 and 1969. Goldsmith finished fifth in points in 1966, the highest of his career.

Owens started 160 races between 1950 to 1964. He won 38 races as a team owner, including the 1966 series title with David Pearson.

Owens’ highest finish in points was runner-up to Lee Petty in 1959. Owens was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013.

Welborn raced from 1952 to 1964 in 183 total races. His highest points finish was fourth in 1955.
