Christopher Bell wins thrilling NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro

NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — Christopher Bell and his team are $1 million richer after winning a thrilling NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Bell brought home his first All-Star Race crown after a fierce battle with Joey Logano. It began on the final restart, with 29 laps to go in the 250-lap affair. Logano stayed out with Ryan Blaney, Ross Chastain, Carson Hocevar and Harrison Burton — while Bell pitted with everyone else and took two fresh tires.

On the restart, Logano jumped out to the lead while Blaney and Burton slid backward, opening the door for Bell to ascend to the lead a few laps later. Logano held off Bell, who grew impatient with Chastain on his bumper.

Finally, with 10 laps to go, Bell got alongside Logano and forced him to lift and lose out on a million bucks.

“North Wilkesboro, how about that one? That right there is absolutely incredible. North Wilkesboro, best short track on the schedule,” Bell said, acknowledging his pit crew who joined him to celebrate. “These boys right here, Adam Stevens on the pit box, all the mechanics, all the engineers that put this thing together, they’re the big picture. I’m the guy that gets to sit up here and talk to you and take pictures, but without them, I’m nobody. I owe it all to these guys.”

Bell led four times for 28 of the 250 laps run, far fewer than Logano who led seven times for 139 laps.

Logano was not happy with Bell.

“I’m pissed off right now. Just dang it, we had the fastest car,” Logano said. “I did all I could do to hold him off and he got under me and released the brake and gave me no option. Kind of just ran me up into the wall, and if I could’ve got to him, he was going around after a move like that, I just couldn’t get back to him. Just too much to try to make up with the tire deficit.”

Logano was also not happy with race promoter Marcus Smith about the caution.

“I’m all about no gimmicks with the caution. I am all about that. I’m a little — me and Marcus Smith aren’t seeing eye to eye right now, okay? I’ve got to have a word with him,” Logano said.

The race didn’t need any gimmicks to be thrilling. The race featured 18 lead changes among eight drivers with 13 of those lead changes happening under green.

Ross Chastain never took a turn at holding the lead and never came close until the end. In fact, on lap 117, he nearly saw his race in turn two when he wrecked with Austin Cindric and Alex Bowman. Chastain stuck it out and used crew chief Phil Surgen’s strategy to finish third.

“There is something knocked out of alignment with the car. Once I spun, I got hit on both sides by cars. I was able to pass some cars after that. Strong night and definitely some bright spots for Trackhouse,” Chastain said.

Not so bright for Trackhouse Racing was Daniel Suarez crashing out after blowing a right-front tire on lap 57. Suarez finished 23rd — last — on the night.

Just ahead of Suarez was Brad Keselowski. Keselowski won the pole and led 62 of the first 63 laps. Under the Suarez caution, crew chief Jeremy Bullins called him in for two fresh tires. That call sent Keselowski back to around ninth until he broke a right-front shock and wrecked out on lap 177.

Just before the promoter’s caution on lap 217, Kyle Larson hit the outside wall and broke a toe link. Larson finished 21st, three laps down.

Hocevar, Blaney and Burton finished 11th, 16th and 20th, respectively, after staying out during the final caution.
