Ty Gibbs bests favorite van Gisbergen to Sonoma Pole
SONOMA, Calif. — Ty Gibbs wins the pole at Sonoma as he and four other have outqualified Shane van Gisbergen in the NASCAR Cup Series on a road course.
This is his third career pole and his first of the season.

The second group had the edge in the sole practice session with better track conditions. Their edge carried over into the qualifying session as all the top five qualifiers where in the group.
Carson Hocevar will start in second for the second consecutive weekend on a road course.
Kyle Larson will start where he left off at Naval Base Coronado in third. Michael McDowell will join him on the second row in fourth as he looks to play spoiler against Bubba Wallace in the opening round of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Wallace will have some damage to repair after he wrecked in the breaking zone into turn 11.
Trackhouse teammates make up the third row with Ross Chastain besting Shane van Gisbergen in fifth and sixth. van Gisbergen went for a damage-free spin but was able to get his second lap time in to qualify the best of the first group.
Then, Chase Briscoe will start right alongside his matchup this weekend from seventh. AJ Allmendinger will start eighth to try and upset Briscoe at a track they both can contend for the win at.
Finally, Denny Hamlin will start ninth and Joey Logano completes the top ten from tenth. Both of them have the upper hand on their matchups in qualifying as the two are happy to be back at a more traditional NASCAR road course.
